An exploration game for iPhone and iPad

Somewhere near you, something is buried.

Expedition is a treasure-hunting game you play by going outside. Walk to a new spot, tap Explore, and see what the ground gives you. Mostly you'll find gold. Sometimes an artifact. Once in a long while, a crystal.

And on the rarest days, a precious gem nobody has ever held before.

Your goal is to help The Curator at The Museum finish stocking its wings so he can open them to the public. The Professor and his assistant, Robertson will research what you discover and tell you if it's worth sending to The Museum.

Walk somewhere new. See what the ground holds.

Walk

The map is your neighborhood. Parks, plazas, and places with a past are the good hunting grounds. The Professor's charts have a mark by them.

Explore

Tap Explore and the ground answers. You get a few looks at any one spot and walking farther improves your odds.

Fill The Museum

Every valuable artifact you submit hangs forever in a themed wing, with your name on a plaque as the finder.

Gameplay

Dig something up and send it to The Professor for investigation.

You get a description of the object in your hands, such as a bleached, brittle sand dollar or a single sheet of handwritten music. Send your photographs and notes to The Professor and his team works out what you have actually found.

That takes a few days for most pieces and sometimes longer for something remarkable. Carry your find until shipping it to The Museum and it gets placed in its wing, and credited to you on a plaque. Set it down before The Professor is finished and you won't learn what you were holding, and the next person along gets the find.

“The Professor and his team have not finished analyzing your documents yet. If you abandon it now, the process will have to start from the beginning. And that's assuming you can find it again.”

Too impatient? One crystal buys a little time. The Professor pockets it and picks up the pace.

The point of it all

The Museum keeps its rooms dark until you earn the light.

Every artifact you send is cataloged forever in a themed wing, among them The Lost Aviators, The Drowned Vault, and The Gilded Age. Wings open to the public when The Curator decides you've found everything.

Fill an entire wing and its patrons reward you for your efforts.

My Travels: a red route drawn across Boston and Cambridge on an aged chart, with 39 searches and 26.3 miles
Every step of an expedition, drawn like an old chart.

My Travels

Every expedition, on its own chart.

Every place you search on an expedition becomes a red line across a map, drawn with a follow-camera that dives, glides, and pulls back for the finale. A short stroll plays like a stroll; a cross-country move glides at movie-plane speed.

When the show ends, take it with you: a trading card of the journey, or a short film rendered right on the phone, ready to share. A year of travels, turned into a single beautiful thing.

A shared ground

The world remembers.

Your pack has limits: five spots, until The Outfitter sells you a rucksack. Set an artifact down and it stays exactly where you left it, waiting for the next explorer who stands on that spot. Every piece carries the whole chain of hands it has passed through, drawn as a red line across an old chart.

Some artifacts are lucky to carry. A few are the opposite.

Treasure is where you find it.

Which means you have to go find it.
